What is Advanced Work Packaging (AWP)?

Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) is a construction-driven method for planning and executing capital projects by organizing scope into sequenced work packages that flow from engineering and procurement straight to the field. Understanding Advanced Work Packaging (AWP)

AWP works backward from the finished asset. A Brief History of AWP

AWP grew out of WorkFace Planning practices pioneered by the Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA) on complex oil sands projects. In 2009, the Construction Industry Institute (CII), a nonprofit consortium based at the University of Texas at Austin, chartered Research Team 272 to formalize an execution model spanning design through workface execution. CII and COAA joined forces in 2011 and coined the term Advanced Work Packaging, later publishing detailed implementation guidance. In 2015, CII recognized AWP as a formal Best Practice, with case-studied projects reporting up to a 25 percent reduction in schedule duration and a 4 to 10 percent reduction in total installed cost.
