What’s an early adopter of Advanced Work Packaging?
We all know at least one of those people who gets to every meeting two minutes early. While everyone else joins exactly on time (or two minutes late), there is always that person who gets there before the rest. For those people, early is on time, and on time is late.
There were a number of people and companies who took a similar approach to Advanced Work Packaging (AWP). These were the organizations that recognized the value before the “Best Practice” label was applied in 2015, before there was a huge body of knowledge and experience to back up the theory. These Early Adopters blazed the trail for others to follow.
So if you are reading this and your company is not doing AWP, is it too late?
Thankfully, the answer is no. You can still get on board, and gain huge benefits from the use of AWP. You aren’t an Early Adopter at this point. Some people have already woken up before you and gone down to the pool area at the hotel to put their towels on the best sun loungers. But there are still spots available.
I’d love to tell you that is isn’t a competition – that everyone will get a nice lounger in the sun and spend their days drinking pina coladas. But we all know that business doesn’t work that way. The other people, in this case, are your competitors and many of them are already executing AWP on their projects.
AWP is now beyond the option to be an early adopter
AWP is no longer the realm of Early Adopters. It has become mainstream. More and more Owner companies are including it in contracts, making it a requirement rather than optional. More and more EPCs and Contractors are doing it as a standard part of their business, regardless of whether the Owner has asked for it.
There are now a growing number of people in the industry with experience of executing AWP successfully on projects, and bringing that wealth of knowledge and lessons learned to other companies and industries.
So adopt before it is too late. Focus on three key areas: People
Hire someone who knows AWP and can help you get started. Having expertise in-house will be a huge benefit in acceleration of adoption.
Process
There is a huge amount of information available to help you navigate what AWP is, and how you can use it on your projects. (Including on our website). Create a process that works for your company.
Technology
AWP is not a paper exercise, and doing it effectively will require a software solution. Adopting O3 will help to supercharge your maturity and catch you up with your competitors.
It isn’t too late.
The Early Adopter label is gone, but you can still consider yourself “Earlier” Adopters if you act now. You get the benefit of nearly two decades of lessons and development, so your path to savings is clearly defined. You just have to get started.
